Geography

Our Vision

Through Geography children become inspired to curiously investigate their immediate environment and the wider world. Children’s knowledge of the world, including places, people, resources and natural and human environments develops through comparison of their local community with the wider world. Geography deepens a child’s understanding and develops their skills to investigate human and physical processes as well as differences and similarities between places and their cultures. Geography also has an important link to our eco themes by providing opportunities for pupils to develop their understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development.

 

Teaching and Learning in Geography

 

Intent 

 

We teach all of the areas of the geography national curriculum and there is progression and continuity between year groups. We aim to develop a knowledge of the location of countries and continents across the world and interpret a range of resources, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs. We identify the significance of countries to recent and natural events around the world. We provide children with a range of rich learning opportunities allowing them to practice their Geography skills, this includes two residentials in contrasting environments to where the school is located. The children are given opportunities to link their Geography learning to environmental issues and sustainable development.

 

Implementation

 

Geography is taught as part of our cross – curricular learning, linking the subject to English, history, music and art, this allows children to achieve depth of learning. As the curriculum is planned to show progression and continuity between year groups they children can begin topics by conveying what they already know. Trips and visiting experts will enhance the learning experience. Homework projects will supplement learning about the topic.

 

Impact

The children are given opportunities to explore the outdoor learning environments, both within the school grounds and local community. There will be a clear progression of skills across Key Stage 1 and 2 that builds on prior knowledge that can be demonstrated in books. Our children will be confident geographers and be able to clearly discuss their learning from past and current topics, as well as explain their next steps. Out-of-class opportunities ensure geography learning is ongoing. Children will take responsibility for looking after their environments
